Band: Three Legged Fox
Album: "Not As Far"
From the suburbs of Philadelphia to the stereo at your summer barbecue comes Three Legged Fox, a quartet gaining notoriety in the East Coast rock scene. The group — Kyle Wareham on lead vocals, guitar, and keyboards; Mike Brody on lead guitar; Kory Kochersperger on drums; and Eric Weisenstein on bass — is now on tour to support their new record, “Not As Far,” a followup to their 2006 debut “Ideas.”
At the helm of “Not As Far” sits acclaimed Philly producer Chris DiBeneditto, who has worked with G Love & Special Sauce and Jack Johnson.
Formed in 2006 in Newark, Del., and now calling Garden City home, Three Legged Fox has perhaps been the best-kept secret of the jam band and reggae scenes within recent years.
The group’s first show was at the University Of Delaware’s 2006 Battle Of Bands. Due to sheer fluke or truly innovative musicianship (probably the latter), the band was awarded first place.
With three years of steady touring, a reputation for a solid live show and two albums to their credit, the musicians behind Three Legged Fox are quickly, and deservingly, making a name for themselves.
At a first listen, it’s evident why the band has won over the frat-boy crowd. The music is a gumbo of reggae, soul and rootsy folk rock with a bit of a Southern twang, readymade for the beach or a beer pong tournament.
Don’t sell these guys short, however; they have some serious musical chops, especially as reggae musicians.
Anchored by singer-guitarist Wareham’s emotive tenor, some of the strongest tunes on “Not As Far” find the group flirting with rock-steady, ska and dub, such as the tense “Maybe I’m Sorry,” the bouncy, horn-driven “Slow Down” and the self-affirming title track.
The more traditional rock tunes really cook, too. “Soul Thief” is pure swamp boogie, featuring gritty guitar and soaring organ riffs the Allmans would approve of, while “Higher Love” is a piano ballad with sedate conga percussion and harmonized vocals.
Stopping by to say hello on a few tracks are members of Slightly Stoopid, John Brown’s Body and G Love & Special Sauce, but it is Three Legged Fox’s tight ensemble work and skillful ability to transcend different styles and genres that make “Not As Far” a refreshing listen for the hot months ahead.
These boys will be Bonnaroo-bound before you know it.
Three Legged Fox will perform at 10 p.m. June 5 at Café 210, 210 W. College Ave., State College. Visit www.threeleggedfoxlive.com or call 237-3449 for more information.
