Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad (GPGDS) has been slowly building a loyal fan base through relentless touring and on Tuesday, February 5, they brought their unique brand of reggae-inspired jam music to Sullivan Hall in NYC’s West Village. Despite being the opening act for the night, there were plenty of loyal Dub Squad fans in the house. With a group of seven musicians, including a female keyboardist, GPGDS gives off the aura of having known each other for a long time, as they intricately play off each other’s grooves.
The results are funk-filled, dub reggae, heavy on the positive vibes and danceable tunes. Sonically, the band is at their strongest when they are jamming, with solid lyrics that pay respect to reggae themes of personal empowerment and understated political messages. Lead singer Matthew O’Brian’s vocals are surprisingly decent for a twenty-something suburbanite, though he still has some developing to do before he can be compared to reggae’s more established elder statesmen. GPGDS is an innovative band with a live set that demands to be seen. They deliver an entertaining set filled with originals guaranteed to keep the crowd moving. With intricate instrumentals laced between laid-back party tunes, the band is quickly establishing itself as a distinct voice in the world of reggae and jam music. Make sure to check them out next time the Dub Squad pass through your town.
