GIANT PANDA GUERILLA DUB SQUAD
To a degree that perhaps no one wants to admit, reggae in the Unites States has become a second cousin to jam-band music. While it certainly would be interesting to go back and figure out how that happened, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad render such concerns moot. White twentysomethings from a snowy Northeastern suburb, the group is sincere enough to prevent the music from descending to the clichéd depths of Trustafarian revue. The band is heavily steeped in roots and dub, but they don’t act like they own the music. The respect comes across in the live show and, presumably, intensified on the Dub Squad’s recent engagement in Jamaica. The keys, drums, bass and guitar establish inviting grooves that sneak up on you before you realize how irresistible—and solid—they are.
